This creamy, Persian oatmeal blends the Persian classic flavors with the Kiwi breakfast staple, porridge. Hence, dessert oatmeal!
Fusion Breakfast Oatmeal
Firstly, this dish is dear to my heart because it represents my mixed heritage. Porridge/oatmeal is typical in New Zealand. Delicious, but not very glam. Therefore, I’ve *spiced* it up with some of the flavors especial to Iran.
is rich, due to its ancient history. And Persian cuisine is exquisite. Because the country is abundant in fruit, each meal is a delicate balance of sweet, salty, nutty, creamy and fresh. And it’s not only dessert. Savory dishes also often feature fruit. Nuts, seeds and spices such as saffron, cinnamon and cardamom garnish most meals.
While you’re here, check out this Persian quinoa salad recipe . It uses similar ingredients but tastes very different.
Halva (or ‘halaweh’ / حلوة, in Arabic)
Halva is a sweet made from tahini, sugar and rose water. Although this oatmeal has less fat, it carries just as much yummy flavor. It is choc-full of healthy goodies. In sum, dessert for breakfast everyday!
Finally, how to make it:
Halva (or 'halaweh' / حلوة, in Arabic) is a sweet made from sweet tahini and rose water. This creamy, halva-inspired oatmeal has less fat and sugar, but just as much flavor.
- 2 cups rolled or scotch-cut oats
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup almond coconut or soy milk (vanilla flavored works a dream!)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp each nutmeg & cardamom
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp rosewater
- 1 Handful chopped dates + other dried fruit such as apricots, figs, cranberries, sour cherries, dried berries and raisins
- Pinch Himalayan sea salt
- 1 banana mashed
- 2 T maple syrup/date syrup/agave
Mix all ingredients and cook on a sauce pan on medium heat until the water has absorbed, stirring so that the bottom doesn't burn.
Top with fresh or frozen fruit, coconut, maple/agave and copious amounts of tahini!
Other recommendations: pistachios or walnuts, carob molasses or delicious, homemade oil free maple granola
